How much does an electrician cost in Abu Dhabi?

ADDC plays the role DEWA plays in Dubai, and the island compounds add a second gate: the facilities office often keeps its own list of contractors it will admit, so ask who is allowed in before you ask what it costs.

Electrical pricing splits cleanly in two, and the split is legal rather than technical. Work on an existing circuit — a socket, a switch, a light, a fan — is ordinary maintenance and priced like it. Work on the supply itself needs a contractor the local authority has approved, and that is a different market at a different price.

UAE price references for planning a job in Abu Dhabi

Electrician: published UAE reference figures in dirhams, not a city-specific survey of Abu Dhabi
Job
Call-out, covering the first 30–60 minutes 99–200 AED Some firms go to 250. Ask whether it is credited against the work.
Socket or switch replaced 120–500 AED Per unit. Replacing several at one visit is cheaper than several visits.
Light fitting supplied and fitted 150–500 AED Per unit for a standard fitting. A chandelier is quoted separately and starts far higher.
Ceiling fan installed 200–700 AED Per unit, and it depends on whether there is already a fixing point capable of carrying it.
Hourly rate after the call-out 150–350 AED Fault-finding rather than a known job. Standard scheduled work is quoted lower, from around 100.
After-hours surcharge +25–60% AED Applied to the hourly rate for evening, weekend and immediate attendance.

What moves the price in Abu Dhabi

Rates track Dubai closely for the same job. What differs is travel: a pro crossing between the islands and the mainland loses time to it, and on a small job that shows up as a call-out charge rather than a higher hourly rate.

Gated communities and island developments run their own access control: the contractor needs a gate pass, arranged through community management, and it is not always same-day. Compound villas usually route the request through the facilities office rather than the tenant.

Who has to approve the work

ADDC — Abu Dhabi Distribution Company. Supply-side electrical and water work is ADDC’s, and it wants a licensed contractor for it. As in Dubai, swapping a fitting on a circuit that already exists is ordinary maintenance and does not go near them.

Homes and access in Abu Dhabi

Two different housing stocks in one city. The older blocks behind the Corniche and around the Tourist Club area are twenty and thirty years old and their plumbing shows it. The island developments — Reem, Saadiyat, Yas — are newer, better built, and stricter about who is allowed through the gate.

Questions people ask

When does the work legally need an approved contractor?

When it touches the supply: the distribution board, a new circuit, anything meter-side. Each emirate has its own authority for this — DEWA in Dubai, ADDC in Abu Dhabi, SEWA in Sharjah, EtihadWE across the northern emirates — and each keeps a register of the contractors it has approved. Replacing a fitting on a circuit that already exists is not in that category.

What is the risk of using someone unapproved for supply work?

Three risks, and they compound. The work may not be safe. Your building may refuse it and make you undo it. And a home insurance claim arising from unapproved electrical work is the easiest kind for an insurer to decline. None of that applies to a socket swap; all of it applies to a new circuit.

The power in one room is dead. Is that a big job?

Usually not. A tripped breaker, a failed socket or a loose connection at one accessible point covers most of these, and it is a call-out and an hour. It becomes a big job only when the fault is in the wiring inside the wall, which is why a pro will want to test before quoting a number.

Can I supply my own light fittings?

Yes, and it usually saves money — you are then paying for labour rather than labour plus a markup. Buy the fitting before the visit, keep the instructions with it, and say what it is when you book so the pro arrives with the right mounting kit.
