How much does an electrician cost in Chicago?
Chicago's electrical code has historically been its own, stricter than the national one — conduit where much of the country allows cable. That is a real cost difference on any job that adds a circuit, and a reason a national price guide reads low here.
Electrical work is the category where the licence question has the least ambiguity and the highest stakes. It is also the one where a homeowner most often pays for a whole visit to solve something that took ten minutes — so the rule of thumb is to save electrical jobs up and buy them together.

What moves the price in Chicago
Around the national middle rather than at the top: closer to the $75-an-hour average than to the coastal $125. Winter is the variable nobody quotes for — an exterior job in February is a different job.
Condo associations behave like New York co-ops — insurance certificates, elevator reservations, restricted hours. Two- and three-flats behave like houses. Establish which one you live in before booking, because the two have completely different lead times.
When the job needs a licensed contractor
Chicago BACP — Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. Illinois issues no state handyman or general contractor licence, so the rule is municipal. Chicago licenses general contractors in value-based classes — the class is chosen by the largest project the contractor expects to take — and it is a business licence with financial and insurance requirements rather than a trade examination. Electrical and plumbing remain separately licensed trades.

Questions people ask
Can a handyman replace an outlet or a light fixture?
In some places and not others, and this is the wrong thing to guess about. Several states license electrical work by trade regardless of the price — Texas licenses electricians through TDLR with no dollar threshold — while New York City requires a separate electrical licence entirely, outside the Home Improvement Contractor licence. What is the risk if I use someone unlicensed?
The work may be unsafe, your municipality may require it undone, and a homeowner's insurance claim arising from unlicensed electrical work is among the easiest for an insurer to decline. For a fixture swap on an existing circuit that risk is small; for anything at the panel or a new circuit it is the whole exposure.
One room has no power. Is that expensive?
Usually not. A tripped breaker, a failed GFCI upstream, or a loose connection at one accessible point accounts for most of these — a service call and an hour. It becomes expensive only when the fault is inside the wall, which is why any competent electrician will want to test before quoting.
Can I supply my own fixtures?
Yes, and it usually saves money, because you pay labour rather than labour plus markup. Have the fixture on site before the visit, keep the mounting hardware with it, and say what it is when you book — a 40lb chandelier and a flush mount are not the same appointment.
