How much does a cleaner cost in Chicago?
Winter move-outs are a different job — salt, grit and road film get tracked through a unit for months, and floors and entryways take disproportionately longer. A quote given in July for a January move-out is the wrong quote.
Regular cleaning and move-out cleaning are sold as if they were the same product and they are not. One is judged by you and priced by the hour. The other is judged by a landlord or a property manager against a checklist, priced by the property, and is the one with your deposit attached to it.

What moves the price in Chicago
Around the national middle rather than at the top: closer to the $75-an-hour average than to the coastal $125. Winter is the variable nobody quotes for — an exterior job in February is a different job.
Condo associations behave like New York co-ops — insurance certificates, elevator reservations, restricted hours. Two- and three-flats behave like houses. Establish which one you live in before booking, because the two have completely different lead times.
When the job needs a licensed contractor
Chicago BACP — Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. Illinois issues no state handyman or general contractor licence, so the rule is municipal. Chicago licenses general contractors in value-based classes — the class is chosen by the largest project the contractor expects to take — and it is a business licence with financial and insurance requirements rather than a trade examination. Electrical and plumbing remain separately licensed trades.

Two- and three-flats, brick bungalows, and high-rise condos along the lake. Basements are ordinary and so is the plumbing that goes with them, and a hundred-year-old building stock means a large share of jobs turn out to be older than they looked.

Will a move-out clean get my security deposit back?
It removes the most common reason for a deduction, which is not the same as a guarantee — a deposit also covers damage and unpaid rent, and cleaning touches neither. Most states require the landlord to give you an itemised list of deductions within a set number of days; photograph the unit empty and clean on the day you hand over the keys, and keep the move-in condition report if you were given one.
What is the difference between a deep clean and a move-out clean?
Who is judging it. A deep clean stops when the place feels right to you. A move-out clean goes after the specific things an inspection looks at — inside the oven and refrigerator, window and door tracks, baseboards, blinds, vent covers, marks on the walls — whether or not you would have noticed them.
Should I book it before or after I move out?
After, with the unit empty, and before the final walkthrough. A clean done around furniture is not a move-out clean, and one booked after the walkthrough is too late to be worth anything.
Hourly or a flat price?
A flat price is the provider's bet on how long your place takes, made after cleaning a hundred like it, and it usually wins if your unit is in ordinary condition. Hourly is the honest way to buy it if the place is unusual in either direction — and ask how many cleaners are coming, because per-person-per-hour and per-hour are very different numbers.
