How much does a cleaner cost in Los Angeles?
Cleaning falls well under California's exemption and raises no licence question. What it raises is scope: LA units frequently have outdoor space, and patios, balconies and garages are almost never in a quote unless you put them there.
Regular cleaning and move-out cleaning are sold as if they were the same product and they are not. One is judged by you and priced by the hour. The other is judged by a landlord or a property manager against a checklist, priced by the property, and is the one with your deposit attached to it.

What moves the price in Los Angeles
Among the highest in the country alongside New York, and the $1,000 exemption shapes the market: a lot of small work is quoted deliberately to sit under it, and any quote that lands just below $1,000 is worth reading twice.
Easy at the door, expensive on the road. There is no lift to book and no doorman to clear, but a pro crossing the basin can lose ninety minutes to traffic, and that time is in your quote whether or not it is itemised. Ask where they are coming from, and batch work so the drive is amortised over more than one job.
When the job needs a licensed contractor
CSLB — Contractors State License Board. California allows unlicensed work on small projects up to $1,000 including all costs — a threshold that had been stuck at $500 since 1987 until AB 2622 raised it on 1 January 2025. The exemption is conditional and both conditions matter: it is void if the job needs any building permit, and void if the person hires anyone to help. An unlicensed person advertising the work must state that they are not licensed.

Will a move-out clean get my security deposit back?
It removes the most common reason for a deduction, which is not the same as a guarantee — a deposit also covers damage and unpaid rent, and cleaning touches neither. Most states require the landlord to give you an itemised list of deductions within a set number of days; photograph the unit empty and clean on the day you hand over the keys, and keep the move-in condition report if you were given one.
What is the difference between a deep clean and a move-out clean?
Who is judging it. A deep clean stops when the place feels right to you. A move-out clean goes after the specific things an inspection looks at — inside the oven and refrigerator, window and door tracks, baseboards, blinds, vent covers, marks on the walls — whether or not you would have noticed them.
Should I book it before or after I move out?
After, with the unit empty, and before the final walkthrough. A clean done around furniture is not a move-out clean, and one booked after the walkthrough is too late to be worth anything.
Hourly or a flat price?
A flat price is the provider's bet on how long your place takes, made after cleaning a hundred like it, and it usually wins if your unit is in ordinary condition. Hourly is the honest way to buy it if the place is unusual in either direction — and ask how many cleaners are coming, because per-person-per-hour and per-hour are very different numbers.
