How much does a handyman cost in Los Angeles?
California is the one place on this list where the price itself decides the licence: up to $1,000 an unlicensed person may do the work, and only if no permit is needed and nobody is hired to help. Which is why a surprising number of Los Angeles quotes land at $950.

What decides the bill on a small job is the minimum: a twenty-minute fix routinely costs $150 to $200 once the trip and the minimum are counted, which means the cheapest hourly rate in town can produce the most expensive invoice for one small task.

What moves the price in Los Angeles
Among the highest in the country alongside New York, and the $1,000 exemption shapes the market: a lot of small work is quoted deliberately to sit under it, and any quote that lands just below $1,000 is worth reading twice.
Easy at the door, expensive on the road. There is no lift to book and no doorman to clear, but a pro crossing the basin can lose ninety minutes to traffic, and that time is in your quote whether or not it is itemised. Ask where they are coming from, and batch work so the drive is amortised over more than one job.
When the job needs a licensed contractor
CSLB — Contractors State License Board. California allows unlicensed work on small projects up to $1,000 including all costs — a threshold that had been stuck at $500 since 1987 until AB 2622 raised it on 1 January 2025. The exemption is conditional and both conditions matter: it is void if the job needs any building permit, and void if the person hires anyone to help. An unlicensed person advertising the work must state that they are not licensed.

Because you bought a visit, not ten minutes. Getting to you, parking, carrying tools in and out, and the minimum charge together account for nearly all of that number. The fix is not to find a cheaper hourly rate — it is to save small jobs up and buy them in one visit, where the trip is paid once instead of four times.
Do I need a licensed contractor, or will a handyman do?
It depends entirely on where you live and, in some states, on what the job costs. New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor licence above $200. California allows unlicensed work up to $1,000, but only with no permit and no hired help. Texas sets no dollar threshold at all and restricts by trade instead. Should I ask for hourly or a flat price?
Flat when you can describe the finished result in a sentence — a fan replaced, a door rehung. Hourly when you have a list, or when nobody can say what is wrong until they open it up. Hourly with no cap on an unclear job is the combination that ends in an argument.

Proof of liability insurance, in writing, and a certificate naming your building if you live in one that asks. Whether the quote includes materials. What happens if the job turns out bigger than it looked. And, in a licensing state, the licence number — which you can look up rather than take on trust.
