How much does a handyman cost in Miami?
Miami has two layers and people forget the second one. Florida requires no state licence for minor non-structural work, but Miami-Dade runs its own county licensing and enforcement on top, and it is stricter than much of the state.
The hourly rate is the wrong number to shop on, and almost everyone shops on it. What decides the bill on a small job is the minimum: a twenty-minute fix routinely costs $150 to $200 once the trip and the minimum are counted, which means the cheapest hourly rate in town can produce the most expensive invoice for one small task.

What moves the price in Miami
Above the national average and below New York. The seasonal swing is real: rates and availability both tighten in the winter season, and again in the weeks after any serious storm.
Condo towers require approval from the association and often a licensed, insured contractor on their own approved list — not merely someone who is licensed. Anything affecting the exterior envelope will need permits and is not handyman work at any price. Ask the association first; in Miami they will have an opinion.

Condominium towers along the water and single-family houses inland, in a climate that is hard on buildings: salt air, humidity, and hurricane code that governs anything touching a window, a door or a roof. Post-Surfside, condo associations are markedly more careful about who they let work on the building.

Why did a ten-minute job cost me $175?
Because you bought a visit, not ten minutes. Getting to you, parking, carrying tools in and out, and the minimum charge together account for nearly all of that number. The fix is not to find a cheaper hourly rate — it is to save small jobs up and buy them in one visit, where the trip is paid once instead of four times.
Do I need a licensed contractor, or will a handyman do?
It depends entirely on where you live and, in some states, on what the job costs. New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor licence above $200. California allows unlicensed work up to $1,000, but only with no permit and no hired help. Texas sets no dollar threshold at all and restricts by trade instead. Should I ask for hourly or a flat price?
Flat when you can describe the finished result in a sentence — a fan replaced, a door rehung. Hourly when you have a list, or when nobody can say what is wrong until they open it up. Hourly with no cap on an unclear job is the combination that ends in an argument.
What should I check before anyone starts?
Proof of liability insurance, in writing, and a certificate naming your building if you live in one that asks. Whether the quote includes materials. What happens if the job turns out bigger than it looked. And, in a licensing state, the licence number — which you can look up rather than take on trust.
